Today's post is more of a commentary on media exploitation, for their own selfish purposes. I was watching the news this morning with my husband, and heard a story regarding Steve Jobs and his choice in cancer care. As many of you know Steve Jobs was the founder of Apple Computers, truly a pioneer and visionary in the technology field. He was well respected and highly revered in his industry, and of course known as a brilliant man with a large heart. Steve Jobs passed away October 5, 2011, of metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer. Apple's website posted this simple obituary honouring him:
"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
There is controversy regarding Jobs' decision to wait 9 months before under going a pancreaticoduodnectomy, during this time he tried juicing, bowel cleansing, acupuncture and various other natural methods to address his cancer. He was advised that his cancer was a slow progressing tumour. It is my opinion that to opt for the first option of surgery and then chemo/radiation is a reckless approach to dealing with health. I would choose those as a last resort. Cancer can only be present in a body that is weakened and not supported by nutrition, physical activity, hydration, cleansing and emotional balance. Chemotherapy uses a chemical cocktail to attempt to kill cancerous cells. Unfortunately there are few chemo drugs able to target specific cancer cells and attack all cells in the body. The diet program they give to you during chemotherapy is atrocious and full of dead foods that further diminish a persons health.
"Chemotherapy works by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells, which grow and divide quickly. But it can also harm healthy cells that divide quickly, such as those that line your mouth and intestines or cause your hair to grow. Damage to healthy cells may cause side effects. Often, side effects get better or go away after chemotherapy is over."
Radiation therapy on the other hand uses high energy laser therapy to shrink tumours and potentially kill cancer cells. Radiation is recommended in about 50% of all cancer cases regardless of the treatment choice. Radiation therapy kills cancer cells by destroying their DNA; it can also damage normal cells. Radiation can be used alone, pre or post surgery, or in combination with chemotherapy. Surgery of course includes a partial removal, resectioning or complete removal of an organ or limb with curative intent. Obviously physicians are not intellectually intending to harm their patients with these toxic measures. This is simply the progress that "modern" medicine has come up with in the search for the cure. Despite the fact that the National Cancer Institute operates on a $5 billion annual budget.
Alternative cancer treatment focuses not on destroying healthy cells, cutting out/removing organs or portions of organs, or radiating cells. Rather the focus is on identifying the root cause of the cancer. Holistic medicine focuses on rebuilding the body, mind and spirit. This is achieved through various means of vitamins, dietary changes, allergy identification and elimination, meditation, deep breathing, lymphatic massage, physical activity, colon cleansing, occasionally coffee enemas, juice feasting, liver cleansing and loving support. The focus is on repairing the damage and rebuilding the body as a whole to complete health. It is neither the fast or easy approach, often requiring great dietary sacrifice and a strong dedication. However healing is definitely possible with this method.
An intelligent, wealthy man such as Steve Jobs not only had access to every possible resource to assist him in his cancer therapies; he also took the time to decide what was right for him. He tried both alternative and conventional therapies from the time he was originally diagnosed in 2003 until his untimely death in 2011. Following his initial surgery, the cancer was believed to be "cured" by medical terms however he never really fully recovered. He seemed to battle with deteriorating health. You can't really blame one therapy over the other, but more accurately recognize he died of cancer. Cancer is not a predictable disease, nor is there a cure. Yes, there are options and therapies that can prolong your life; often drug therapies do not improve the quality of your life. If it were me I would do everything I could naturally to prevent cancer (and I do), and if I were to have it I would do everything naturally to correct my health. It serves not a single sufferer, survivor or person to blame one method over the other. You have to educate yourself, weigh the pros and cons of what you are faced with and walk your own line. Be true to yourself, your family and your body. The more you love yourself and focus on prevention today, the longer and happier your life will be. Always remember life is not a destination, but rather a journey to be enjoyed and cherished.
